Medical Volunteers Honored for Saving Athlete’s Life

During Opening Ceremonies at the recent Special Olympics Illinois Outdoor Sports Festival in Decatur, three volunteers were honored with a standing ovation for their efforts to save the life of an athlete from Lincoln who suffered a heart attack at a district softball tournament in July. Gov. Pat Quinn Signs HB 200 into law

On July 28th, 2011 HB 200 “Protecting our Student Athletes Act” officially became law when Gov.Pat Quinn signed the bill in Chicago at Solider Field. The law, which was introduced in the House by Rep. Tom Cross (R-Oswego) and in the Senate by Kwame Raoul (D-Chicago), will amend the school code to require school districts to work with the IHSA in developing guidelines for the education of athletes, coaches and parents/guardians to the potential risk of concussions and/or brain injury. This law aims to better educate the public as to the dangers of head injuries and the potential long term effects that young athletes can suffer from head trauma incurred during athletic competition.

Springfield – (February, 2011) – the Illinois Athletic Trainers’ Association (IATA) is pleased to join the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) in congratulating State Representative Tom Cross (R-Oswego) and the Illinois House of Representatives on unanimous (112-0) passage of HB 200: Concussion Education Bill.

Position: Graduate Assistant/Graduate Intern Positions in Athletic Training

Function of Position:

Under the supervision of the head athletic trainer, carry out prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries incurred by North Central College student athletes. Under supervision of the Director of the Athletic Education Program, supervise and instruct athletic training students.

Responsibilities:

Assume responsibility for maintaining the athletic training room in a clean and organized manner at all times.
Arrange adequate time to complete rehabilitation appointments.
Organize and schedule athletic training student clinical rotations for practices and events.
Supervise athletic training students in procedure and protocols.
Serve as an Approved Clinical Instructor/Clinical instructor.
Verify and complete medical records.
Maintain security for the athletic training room and supplies.
Monitor and facilitate communication between members of the Sports Medicine team: physicians, nurses, therapists, athletic trainers, coaches, administrators.
Coordinate athlete referral to team physician.
Evaluate athletic training students each term and inform the ATEP director of their progress.
Other related duties as assigned by your supervisor, the head athletic trainer.

Qualifications Standards:

Bachelors degree and BOC Certified
Valid Divers License, Illinois licensed or eligible, current CPR for the HealthCare provider

The athletic trainer will have professional involvement in the comprehensive medical care of athletes and physically active individuals. The athletic trainer will recognize and assess athletic injuries, perform evaluations, rehabilitate athletic injuries, provide injury prevention education, sports safety, emergency care, and management of practices, games, screenings and events. Practices and games include but not limited to: soccer, football, lacrosse, and rugby of all ages.

The athletic trainer will also be responsible for working with the marketing department. This allows the athletic trainer independence to develop relationships in the community.
